GuruCool is a learning service for children, offered on gurucoolin.com and in the GuruCool mobile app (together, the "Service"). The Service is run by Gurucool Manissha Studio, Bajaj Niwas, 712, Linking Road, Khar (W), Mumbai 400052, India ("GuruCool", "we", "us").
This policy is written for parents and guardians. It explains what information we collect about your child, why we collect it, who can see it, and the choices you have. There is a short note for kids at the end.
1. GuruCool is made for children, with a parent in charge
- A parent or legal guardian must set up the account with the child. During sign-up, the parent confirms their consent and creates a 4-digit parent PIN.
- We treat every account as a child's account and apply the protections for children under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 ("DPDP Act").
- The parent PIN is needed to buy coins or courses, open settings and parent controls, log out, delete the account, and share or open links outside GuruCool.
- If we learn that an account was created without a parent's consent, we will ask for consent or delete the account.
2. Information we collect
Sign-in and profile
- A phone number (checked with a one-time code) or an email address (when signing in with Google).
- The child's name, date of birth, gender and class.
- A profile photo, only if you choose to add one. Otherwise we use a default image.
- A referral code, if you joined through one.
Parent controls
- A record that a parent gave consent, and when.
- The parent PIN, which we store only in a scrambled (one-way hashed) form that cannot be turned back into the PIN.
- The daily screen-time limit you choose.
Learning activity
- Lessons watched, where your child stopped, and which lessons they finished.
- How many minutes of lessons were watched each day (used for the screen-time limit).
- Quiz answers and scores, and the XP, streaks, levels and badges earned.
- Saved and liked lessons, and the last few searches.
Community and chat
- Questions, posts, comments and likes in the community.
- Chat requests, accepted contacts and blocked users.
- Text messages sent in chat. Chat is text only, and only works between children who have accepted each other's chat request.
- Reports your child makes, and reports other users make about content.
Purchases
- Coin wallet balance and history, courses bought, and plan records.
- Payments are handled by Razorpay. We do not receive or store full card, UPI or bank details.
Device and technical information
- A push notification token, so we can send notifications to the device.
- Basic device information (such as device type and operating system), IP address and server logs, used for security and fixing problems.
- Lessons you download for offline viewing are stored on your device.
Cookies and browser storage
The website uses your browser's storage to keep you signed in and to remember settings such as the theme. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies.
3. How we use information
- To provide lessons, quizzes, progress tracking, achievements and "continue watching".
- To run parent controls, including the PIN and the daily screen-time limit.
- To keep children safe. We automatically block posts, comments and messages that contain bad language or personal contact details (such as phone numbers, emails, links or social media handles). We hide content that several users report, and our team reviews reports. We may suspend accounts that break the rules.
- To process purchases and manage the coin wallet.
- To send service notifications, such as chat requests, new messages and account updates.
- To keep the Service secure, prevent fraud, fix problems and meet our legal obligations.
What we never do:
- We do not sell personal data.
- We do not show targeted or behavioural advertising to children. We do not track children or build profiles of them for advertising.
- We do not send marketing messages to children.
- Automatic analytics collection and advertising ID collection are switched off in the app.
4. What other users can see
- Visible to other users: your child's name, profile photo, and the posts and comments they share in the community.
- Visible only to accepted contacts: chat messages and whether your child is online.
- Never shown to other users: phone number, email, date of birth, gender, class, learning progress, achievements, wallet and purchases.
- Children can block and report other users, posts, comments and messages at any time.
5. Who we share information with
We share information only with service providers who help us run GuruCool, and only what they need to do their job:
- Google Firebase: sign-in (phone codes and Google sign-in) and push notifications.
- Bunny.net: storing and delivering lesson videos and images.
- Razorpay: processing payments.
- Cloud hosting and database providers (including DataStax for chat storage): storing the Service's data.
We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect the safety of a child or others, or to prevent fraud. If GuruCool is involved in a merger or sale, we will tell parents before personal data moves to a new owner, and it will stay protected by this policy.
Our service providers may store or process data outside India. When that happens, we take reasonable steps to keep it protected as described in this policy and as required by Indian law.
6. How long we keep information
- We keep information while the account is open.
- When a parent deletes the account (Settings → Parent controls → Delete account, which needs the parent PIN), we delete the profile, learning activity, achievements, community posts and comments, and chat data. Chats your child was part of are deleted for both people.
- Some records are kept after deletion: payment and purchase records that tax and accounting laws require us to keep (without your child's profile details), and safety reports made by others about the account when we need them to protect other users.
- Copies may stay in our backups for a limited time until they are overwritten.
7. Your rights and choices as a parent
Under the DPDP Act and other applicable law, you can:
- See and correct your child's information from the profile and settings screens, or by contacting us.
- Delete the account and its data at any time from Parent controls, or by emailing us.
- Withdraw consent by deleting the account or contacting us. We will then stop using your child's information and delete it, except the records described in section 6.
- Control use with the parent PIN, the daily screen-time limit, and block and report tools.
- Nominate another person to exercise these rights on your behalf if you are unable to.
- Complain to our Grievance Officer (see section 10). If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
8. Security
We protect information with measures such as verified sign-in through Firebase, parent PINs and admin passwords stored only as one-way hashes, encrypted connections, restricted access to our systems, and automatic safety filters. No system is completely secure. If a data breach affects your child's information, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
9. Changes to this policy
If we make important changes, we will tell parents in the app or by email before the changes take effect, and update the date at the top of this page.
10. Contact us and Grievance Officer
For questions, requests or complaints about your child's data, contact our Grievance Officer:
- Email: support@gurucoolin.com
- Post: Grievance Officer, Gurucool Manissha Studio, Bajaj Niwas, 712, Linking Road, Khar (W), Mumbai 400052, India

A note for kids
- Your grown-up set up GuruCool with you, and they are in charge of your account.
- We keep track of the lessons you watch and the quizzes you take, so we can show your progress and give you badges.
- Other kids can see your name, your photo and what you post. They can't see your phone number, email or birthday.
- Never share your phone number, address, school or passwords with anyone in GuruCool. Our filter will try to stop it, but it's best to never type it.
- You can only chat with friends who accepted your chat request.
- If something makes you feel uncomfortable, tap Report or Block and tell your grown-up.
